The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Baftas) announced its nominations on 9 January 2013. Stephen Spielberg’s Lincoln dominates yet another awards list with 10 nominations for, among others, Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actor (Daniel-Day Lewis), Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones) and Sally Field (Supporting Actress).
Close on the remarkable president’s heels are Les Miserables and Life of Pi with nine nominations each.
For Les Miserables, Hugh Jackman is nominated as Leading Actor and Anne Hathaway as Supporting Actress. The movie is also nominated for Best Film and Outstanding British Film, among other awards.
Ang Lee’s Life of Pi is nominated for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Special Visual Effects with Lee as Director.
Argo and Zero Dark Thirty complete the list of nominees for Best Film. Ben Affleck is nominated for Director and for Leading Actor, while Zero Dark Thirty’s Kathryn Bigelow is nominated for Director with Jessica Chastain as Leading Actress.
Quentin Tarantino is nominated for Director and Original Screenplay for Django Unchained, which received five nominations, and Christoph Waltz for Supporting Actor, echoing his popularity in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds in 2009.
Also in the Original Screenplay category is The Master. Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams are rewarded for their powerful performances with nominations as Leading Actor, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress respectively.
Popular Bond movie, Skyfall, received eight nominations with Judi Dench and Javier Bardem receiving nods as Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor. The film is also nominated for Outstanding British Film.
Anna Karenina has been nominated in six categories, namely Outstanding British Film, Original Music, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair.
The Imposter, McCullin, Marley, Searching for Sugar Man and West of Memphis are nominated in the Documentary category.
The Baftas take place on Sunday 10 February 2013 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London. The ceremony will be hosted by actor and writer Stephen Fry and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD.
