eNCA current affairs show Against All Odds, hosted by award-winning journalist Mpho Lakaje, scooped an international award from The Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) in London on 7 November. Against All Odds airs on Fridays at 20h45 on eNCA on DStv channel 403 and in the UK on channel 518 on the Sky digital satellite platform.
Says Patrick Conroy, Head of eNCA: “This award is important because it recognises the fact that we also tell stories of hope, inspiration and achievement. The story of this country, and indeed all of Africa, is also a story about overcoming the challenges we face and succeeding in what we do. This has now been acknowledged at an international level. eNCA is very proud of Mpho Lakaje and his team.’
Against All Odds was up against seven international broadcasters from around the globe. The award has been awarded in the category short documentary for the story of KZN-born Lucas Sithole, who is South Africa’s number one ranked disabled tennis player and ninth in the world.
Other nominees in the category were A Tale of a Survivor from Antena 3; Girl Hub – Tirunesh from BBC Media Action; Harapan Rainforest from Deutsche Welle; and One Family, Three Armies and a Lost Generation from RFE/RL.
The AIBs, now in their 8th year, celebrate creativity and reward success in factual programming. Each year the AIBs searches for the most inspiring storytelling across radio, TV and online. It includes entries from 23 countries across five continents, from Norway to Nigeria and from Canada to Taiwan, reflecting the best of global TV and radio production and technology. The AIBs are judged by a panel of independent, international jury members. The constantly changing panel consists of producers, editors, journalists, writers and critics.
