The drama Homeland and the sitcom Modern Family were the big winners at the 64th Annual Primetime Emmys, presented on 23 September at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
Homeland, which beat out more established shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad, won four Emmys, including best drama series and acting awards for Claire Danes and Damian Lewis triumphed
Modern Family also won four awards, one of which was best comedy series.
Dame Maggie Smith won the best supporting actress award for her work in the hit British series Downton Abbey.
Oscar-winner Kevin Costner won his first ever Emmy for best lead actor in a miniseries or movie for Hatfields & McCoys.
Another big screen star to win his first Emmy was Tom Berenger for best supporting actor, also for Hatfields & McCoys.
Screen legend and past Emmy winner, Jessica Lange, won the best supporting actress in a miniseries or movie for American Horror Story.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus was judged best lead actress in a comedy for Veep.
