Media Monitoring Africa, the LINK Centre at the Faculty of Humanities, the University of the Witwatersrand and the SOS: Support Public Broadcasting Coalition will hold a free public seminar on public broadcasting policy and programming and the role of the SABC on Thursday, 30 August from 16h00 to 18h00 at Wits University in Johannesburg.
The seminar is titled Lack of Diversity: Policy, Progamming & Perspectives on the SABC. Media Monitoring Africa will launch its recently completed study, Lack of Diversity. Repeat, which examined quality and diversity in the programming and news content of the SABC. The study found that the public is continually feed with the same (old) programmes across the services of South Africa’s public broadcaster. This has major implications for the role and impact and future of the SABC.
A keynote address will be delivered by Professor Tawana Kupe, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand.
Invited panellists include representatives from the SABC, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), SOS and the television industry.
The venue is the Wits Institute for Social & Economic Research (WISER) Seminar Room, 6th Floor, Richard Ward Building, East Campus, University of the Witwatersrand (parking in Senate House.
