According to NewsCentral Media, black business support group the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nafcoc) has bought a 20% stake in broadcast start-up Mobile TV.
Mobile TV, a black-owned consortium founded by Mothobi Mutloatse, has applied for a broadcasting licence from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and plans to use South Korean digital multimedia broadcasting technology (the DMB standard) to introduce mobile television services and digital audio broadcasting (DAB) radio stations.
Nafcoc believes Mobile TV will address the lack of access to information and entertainment in rural areas by bypassing the need to purchase a set-top box.
