After three weeks of release, the new South African film, Angus Buchan’s Ordinary People (31 prints), has made just over R2m. It made the number five spot in Ster-Kinekor’s Top 8 earners over the weekend of 20 to 22 April.
Meanwhile, two other phenomenally successful local films, Semi-Soet (14 prints) and Material (10 prints), continue their box office runs. As at 22 April Semi-Soet had made R9,3m and Material R7.6m Both films have been on circuit for a massive 10 weeks.
By contrast, the big budget Hollywood release that was shot in Cape Town, Safe House (7 prints), starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, has been on release for 11 weeks and has made R10.9m.
The top earner for the weekend in question was The Hunger Games (67 prints) which made R1.4m and has a cumulative box office after two weeks of R4.8m. (Figures supplied by SAFACT)
