South African filmmaker, entrepreneur and IT whizz-kid Ronnie Apteker will deliver the keynote address – Ubuntu in Film – at the Cilect 2012 Cape Town Congress (1 – 4 May), to be attended by approximately 200 international film school delegates.
Cilect is the international association of film and television schools and this is the first time in its 60-year existence that the conference will be held in Africa.
Ronnie Apteker has been involved in producing films such as Material, Jerusalema, Footskating 101, Crazy Monkey Presents Straight Outta Benoni, Out On A Limb and Purpose.
Says Garth Holmes, chairman and founder of the AFDA Film School and executive member of Cilect Cape Town 2012: “Ronnie is a unique South African. He can probably be best described as South Africa’s Marc Zuckerberg of the 1990s – his passion and love for life and all things movies is total infectious.
“The Ubuntu in Life Keynote address will be delivered by ANC veteran and chief whip Mathole Moshekga, attorney and multiple title and office bearer. Ubuntu is a concept that gains relevance as the world becomes increasingly globalised and we are therefore better able to recognise our shared humanity. Ubuntu is about collaboration and belonging and we need to take a cue from those outside of the film sector to celebrate the spirit of Ubuntu.’
Apteker attended the University of Witwatersrand, graduating cum laude with an M.Sc in computer science. He co-founded the country’s first and most successful Internet service provider, Internet Solutions.
Due to the success of his recently released film Material, Apteker is keen to launch a new project in London in the near future. Although he is exceedingly successful in business, his true passion lies in film. He was once asked how to fix the South African film industry. His response was simple: ” We keep making films. We keep losing money. Hopefully, we’ll eventually get better.’
Apteker will deliver his Cilect keynote on Thursday, 3 May.
The conference will be preceded by the Cilect African Regional Association (CARA) conference on 30 April.
