Over 133 community radio stations have been licensed in South Africa since 1994 but only 100 are still operating. These were the figures presented by the Department of Communications (DOC) to the parliamentary portfolio communications committee in Cape Town on 13 March.
As per the DOC’s Strategic Plan for 2012/13, the department will provide support to the community radio stations and provide infrastructure to 10 new stations.
On the non-community radio station side, the DOC noted that public broadcaster SABC will establish a National Youth Radio Station once the country has migrated to a fully digital broadcasting environment.
