The Franco Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) and AfricAvenir Windhoek present the Namibian premiere of the award-winning Tunisian / French film, The Wedding Song (Le Chant Mariees), on Wednesday, 14 March at 6.30pm at the FNCC in Windhoek.
Directed by Karin Albou, The Wedding Song stars Lizzie Brochere, Simon Abkarian, Karin Albou, Olympe Borval and Najib Oudghiri.
Set in Tunis in 1942 the film tells of two 16-year-olds, Nour and Myriam, who have been friends since childhood. They share the same house in a modest neighborhood where Jews and Muslims live in harmony. Each girl secretly desires the other’s life – while Nour regrets that she doesn’t go to school, Myriam dreams of love. Myriam is envious of Nour’s engagement to her cousin, Khaled, who epitomises the Arabian prince ideal they both desire.
Unfortunately Khaled cannot find work and the prospect of a union grows more distant. Political upheaval and turmoil conspire to keep Myriam from her dream as well, when her mother decides to marry her to a rich doctor.
The film is in Arabic and French with English subtitles.
