The much hyped epic, Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (directed by Wei Te-Sheng), scooped the Best Film award at the 48th Golden Horse Awards, which were announced at a glitzy, star-studded event held on 26 November in Hsinchu City, Taiwan (Republic of China).

At over four hours in length, Seediq Bale tells the historical story of a Taiwanese aboriginal tribe’s rebellion against Japanese colonial rulers during the 20th century. Wei Te-Sheng is the director of the popular Taiwanese film, Cape No. 7, which screened in South Africa during this year’s Taiwan Film Festival.

A surprise winner in the Best Director category was Hong Kong’s Ann Hui for her sensitive drama, A Simple Life. The film’s two leads, Andy Lau and Deanie Ip, won the Best Actor and Best Actress awards.

The awards ceremony was attended by a group of journalists and film festival programmers from Johannesburg, New York, Canada, Washington DC, Slovenia, New Zealand and Italy, all of whom were graciously brought out for the event by Taiwan’s Government Information Office.
