Sentech’s national broadband plan

TechCentral reports that parastatal signal distributor Sentech plans to roll out a national broadband network that will provide coverage to areas not catered for by the private sector.

Sentech’s broadband intention was presented to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications on 25 March as part of its Strategic Plan.

The intention is to provide Internet access to schools, clinics and underserviced rural and municipal areas within a deadline of five years.

To achieve this Sentech is hoping to receive funds from the Department of Communications and National Treasury.

Sentech’s first attempt at building a wireless broadband business, My Wireless, proved unsuccessful and was terminated in 2009.
