Oscar nominees announced

South Africa’s hopes of having a nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the upcoming Oscars were sadly dashed on 25 January when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced list of nominees.

Life, Above All, the film by South African-born Oliver Schmitz which received a 10-minute standing ovation at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and which has won numerous awards, was not nominated. Last week the film the final shortlist of nine films from 66 countries around the world.

Films from Mexico, Greece, Denmark, Canada and Algeria were nominated.
