Stanley Edwards of Platypus Productions in Cape Town is helping to mobilise South Africans to join the Million Mile Challenge – to collectively walk, or run a million miles, and to raise money for charity.

Says Edwards: “Yes, it will take a while but that’s why it’s called a challenge! By joining the challenge you can be part of a global community who can really make a difference for those in need. Everyone needs your money – I just need your time to help us reach the goal of walking a million miles. You can walk by yourself whenever and wherever you can, get a few people together or get your company, school or organisation to put an event together – so long as you log your miles and let us know.

“Funds will be raised by getting pledges, with your assistance, which will only be paid if we as a group reach our goal of a million miles. It will be great fun, you’ll get fit and healthy and out into the fresh air so please join up.’
The Million Mile Challenge was launched on Mandela Day on 18 July when 69 people (and four dogs) from Perth to Port Elizabeth collectively walked 192 miles so only 999 808 to go.

To join the challenge do the following:
1. Register for the challenge, start walking and help us reach our target of a million miles.
2. Spread the word – get as many people involved as possible.
3. Personally pledge or secure pledges from friends, family, colleagues, businesses, etc.

The challenge will be using Endomondo to keep track of all the miles walked and so you need to register on www.endomondo.com.

Says Edwards: “Endomondo is a really cool website and application for your mobile phone or Garmin device that uses GPS to automatically record all your activities so that we can keep track of all the miles. You can also manually record your activities on the website if you don’t have a phone with GPS, a Garmin or if you use a treadmill, a pedometer or any other distance measurement device. You can use your car or even Google Maps to find out the distance you walked. Registering on Endomondo and logging your distance does take a bit of time and effort but it’s a simple and fun way keep track of the Million Mile Challenge and you can have an on-line record of all your personal activities so please take the time to register on Endomondo. Alternately, send us your weekly distance to mmc@platypus.co.za. Once you’ve registered on Endomondo, you’ll find the Million Mile Challenge on the website.’
