Unlike other host countries of the Fifa World Cup, South Africa’s cinema attendance figures for the month of June (when the 2010 World Cup was in full swing) did not dip. In fact, the figures for that month were distinctly higher than previous years.
Cinema chain Ster-Kinekor and big screen advertising broker Cinemark attribute the box office’s good performance during the World Cup to a number of factors. These include an influx of foreign visitors, extra long school holidays coupled up with long-anticipated 3D kids movie releases, holiday packages, and the screening of World Cup matches in 3D.
The South African comedy, Leon Schuster’s Schuks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to South Africa 2010 proved to be a phenomenal hit during June, out- performing other popular titles.
Upcoming releases such as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Salt, and the latest addition of the old favourite, The Karate Kid bode well for the box office in the coming months.
