The Abyss Boys a short film by Jan-Hendrik Beetge won the category of the Best Short Film 2010 at the AMAA‘s ( African Movie Academic Awards) that took place in Yenegoa, Bayelsa state , in Nigeria on Saturday 10 April. The film was written and directed by Jan-Hendrik Beetge and produced by Ten10film’s Rachel Young and Tendeka Matatu.
The Abyss Boys was funded by Focus Features as part of its Africa First 2009 initiative; Goethe institute- Art in Africa , The NFVF and I&J. It was shot in and around Cape Town and stars Travis Snyders as Jimmy, Moegammad Ja’Qoob Isaacs as AB and Brendon Daniels as Gonyama
The film is set in the slums of a small fishing community on the Southern coast of South Africa, where the world of illegal abalone poaching has become so dangerous life that Jimmy, a legendary ex diver, decides he has to escape.
The Abyss Boys has also been accepted to the 17th Annual New York African Film Festival, Athens International Film and Video Festival, which takes place April 23 – 29, 2010 and the Cannes Short Film Corner in May 2010.
