Ira Teinowitz of The Wrap reports that a recently released Government Accountability Office report has raised doubts about the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) estimate that video piracy caused a $6.1bn loss to the industry in 2005.
The report believes the figure may not be accurate due to what it terms the lack of a systematic means for tracking piracy and the fact that estimates are based on fragmentary data. It does however recognise the damage that piracy is doing to the industry.
Several consumer groups have also questioned the MPAA’s figure.
