While South Africa has concerns that its controversial public service broadcasting bill will be rushed through parliament to become law, there is a similar situation in the UK where there are fears the digital economy bill will be made law before a general election is called.
The Guardian reports the bill contains a number of contentious aspects, such as the suspension of the broadband connections used by anybody accused of file sharing three times. Another clause, which has subsequently been somewhat diminished, would have given power to the secretary of state to update copyright law without going through parliament.
