After five weeks on release at the South African box office Avatar had made a whopping R31.8m. Other films which had accumulated big, if not comparable, box office earnings by 17 January were 2012 (R16.7m), Couples Retreat (R13.6m), Alvin & The Chipmunks 2 (R12m) and Invictus (R9.8m).
The South African candid camera film, Rainbow Skellums had made R1.9m, a good result for an Afrikaans-language film.
