Two hundred viewers in Kampala, Uganda are currently receiving test digital terrestrial television (DTT) signals broadcast by five local TV stations. Uganda plans to switch its analogue signals by December 2012.
According to Russell Southwood of Balancing Act, the pilot transmissions are being carried out by Next Generation Broadcasting, a Swedish DTT company in partnership with national broadcaster Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) TV.
Southwood notes that the issue of who will be the signal carrier has not yet been settled, with the private sector reluctant to be put into the hands of the incumbent broadcaster.
