Tristram Atkins (32), who is studying for a BA Honours in Film Production at the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, has been selected along with four others to travel to the UK as the guest of the Go see UK competition. The tour of London’s creative arts scene has been organised by the Western Cape Provincial Government.
The other four winners of the GO SEE UK Competition are Adrian Nomdee (Music and Slam poetry), Chantal Stanfield (Performance), Sascha Egelhof (Music) and Sivuyile Ngesi (Performance). Atkins represents the area of Film.
There were 200 contestants who entered the Go see UK competition. The students were put through their paces in three rounds of auditions and interviews over the past year before the five winners were selected.
Atkins has excelled academically and received numerous awards for his dramatic and film productions. He has been involved in developing programmes to facilitate film production and dramatic skills in disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape.
In 2006 the short film Ongeriewe, which he produced together with Capetonians Robin Kleinsmidt, the director, Christopher Wessels, the cinematographer, and Keenan Arrison, the lead actor, was selected as a finalist out of 3;500 films worldwide for the 2006 Cannes Film Festival Best Short Film award.
Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde is hosting a farewell event for the five winners this Friday afternoon in Cape Town. The winners will visit the UK from 20 to 30 November.
