A solution to resolve the catastrophic financial and management crisis at South African public broadcaster SABC which is destroying the independent production sector might be to privatise it, according to the Democratic Alliance (DA).
DA spokesman Niekie van den Berg is quoted in Business Day as pointing out that the SABC’s three-times suspended CEO Dali Mpofu received a R2.1m bonus during last year, despite the fact that the SABC was heading into its current debt of over R800m.
Recent media reports have revealed that both the national and provincial governments owe the broadcaster R300m for advertising.
