The message from one of the conference sessions at the MIPTV content market in Cannes, France this week is that it’s time to take the online games industry seriously. According to Michel Cassius of game developer Dubit, online gaming revenues will top $3bn by 2010.
Stressing that online gaming can be monetised, Cassius said that TV companies should get into this sector of the entertainment industry.
Online game creator Bigpoint, which has 27 games in 17 languages, generates revenues of $100m a year. It uses a new model where Bigpoint games are free to play and 90% of revenue comes from the sale of low-cost virtual items, with 4% from ad revenue.
