Mr Bones 2 made a staggering R6m in its opening weekend (28 to 30 November) on the South African cinema circuit, proving the mega pulling power of its star, Leon Schuster. This performance equates to the most successful South African film opening ever, outgrossing the likes of Hollywood blockbusters like Quantum Of Solace, High School Musical 3, Hancock, Kung Fu Panda, Iron Man, Dark Knight and Mamma Mia.
Mr Bones 2 made its biggest revenue at the Gateway Cinemas in Durban, not surprising considering the film was primarily shot in that city. The original Mr Bones made R33m and industry experts predict that the sequel will surpass that. If it does, it may topple Titanic’s box office record (R40m), which is the highest grossing film in South Africa ever.
The only other big earner during the same weekend was Quantum of Solace, which took R2.4m.
