No big surprise to hear that the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, went straight to the top of the South African box office in its opening weekend (21 to 23 November). With 93 prints countrywide, the film took a massive R5.8m. This mimics its performance overseas, where “Quantum’ has blitzed the global box office.
Good news for the local industry though is that Jerusalema is still on circuit, after 12 weeks and has made just over R4m as at 20 November. For the weekend in question it was in the number seven spot in the UIP Top 10 and took in R19,517.
Another new local film, Discreet, maintained its spot in the top eight of the Ster-Kinekor box office figures for the same weekend. It has made R94,947 after two weeks of release.
