Bones 2: Back From The Past, the eagerly awaited sequel to Mr Bones, South Africa’s highest ever local grossing film, earned R1m in a sneak peak preview held on the weekend of 22 November. This makes Mr Bones 2 the most successful Sneak Preview release of all time for a South African film.
The film releases on 110 screens nationally as from 27 November, in the widest theatrical release yet seen for a local film. Mr Bones 2 stars Leon Schuster along with Leeanda Reddy, Kaseran Pillay, Tongayi Chirisa, Meren Reddy, Keith Gengadoo and funny man Alfred Ntombela, is directed by Gray Hofmeyr and produced by Anant Singh and Helena Spring.
According to the cinemas which hosted the sneak previews, audiences “flocked” to see the film, with tickets sold out at most venues. Audiences reportedly found Mr Bones 2 funnier than the original. Many cinemas requested additional prints of the film as a result.
Anant Singh expressed delight at the positive response to the film. “Mr Bones is a very precious brand and we wanted to create a follow-up that is as good, or better than, the original and it seems like we have succeeded. We expect Mr Bones 2 to be the biggest film this holiday season. It is clearly on the way to breaking all box office records like Mr Bones 1 did when it was released in 2001, outgrossing the likes of Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter.’
