The National Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG) is resorting to federal mediation to end the months-long stalemate in contract renewal negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP).
Whether the AMPTP will agree to mediation is another story – it is quite likely that they may refuse, given their stance that it is unreasonable for SAG to demand a better deal than the AMPTP concluded with other guilds.
Meanwhile, SAG itself is not wholly united, comprising two distinct factions – Membership First and Unite for Strength. It is believed that Membership First is dedicated to the idea of a strike, which would, like the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike of earlier this year, cripple production in Hollywood.
