According to Hollywood Reporter, the negotiating committee of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) is urging its national board to issue a strike authorisation vote among its members.
This follows months of stalemated negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) over SAG’s contract renewal. A key issue in the breakdown of negotiations has been SAG’s standpoint on new media residuals.
If the strike authorisation is issued, a “Yes’ vote by 75% of SAG’s membership will give SAG leadership the power to call a strike whenever it deems fit.
The AMPTP issued this statement in response: “Is this really the time for anyone associated with the entertainment business to be talking about going on strike? Not only is the business suffering from recent economic conditions, but if ever there was a time when Americans wanted the diversions of movies and television, it is now.”
