The South African film, Son of Man, a modern re-working of the story of Chris, made R17, 923 in its opening weekend (20 – 22 June) at the local box office. Quite good going for a local arthouse release. Made two years ago, Son of Man was directed by Mark Donford-May and stars Pauline Malefane and features the Dimpho Di Kopane performers.

Biggest earner over the same weekend was the new version of The Incredible Hulk, starring Edward Norton and Liv Tyler. It took in R1.8m and was followed by the Martin Lawrence comedy, College Road Trip (R880,312).

In third spot is The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which took R734,949 over the weekend. Fourth and fifth spots were taken by new release Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Happening respectively. (Figures supplied by SAFACT)
