In line with its blitz on the global box office, Iron Man, based on the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name and starring Robert Downey Jnr, made an astonishing R4.3m in its opening week (2 – 8 May) in South Africa.
Patrick Dempsey, currently one of TV’s hottest stars courtesy Grey’s Anatomy, has made an impressive entry ointo the South African cinema circuit with his big screen comedy, Made of Honor. Its box office of R2.5m put it in second spot for the above week.
Jodie Foster’s family adventure Nim’s Island was in third spot for the same week, followed by Katie Holmes’ Mad Money and Dan in Real Life, a comedy which features the unlikely pairing of Steve Carell (The Office) and French Oscar winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient).
But the really good news is that the locally produced Afrikaans-language teen comedy, Bakgat! is still in the top 10 after four weeks of release and has made an impressive R2.3m, indicating that it has successfully hit its target market.
