Films from Lola Kenya Screen, made by children aged 9 to 12 years, are being screened in Berlin, Munich, Brussels, Kampala and Kigali.
“Little Knowledge is Dangerous’ and “Manani Ogres’ are scheduled for screening at the 17th Jugend Medien Festival (Youth Media Festival Berlin), Berlin, Germany (21 – 25 May) and also at Prix Jeunesse, the world’s leading television programmes for children festival in Munich, Germany (30 May – 4 June 4).
While the two films from the “African Folk Tales Animated’ compilation are in competition in Berlin, they will screen in the Video-Bar in Munich. Also screening in the same section is “The Wise Bride’, the third film on the three film and three-song “African Folk Tales Animated’ compilation.
These films, which premiered at Lola Kenya Screen 2007, have since been shown on KBC Television in December 2007 and January 2008. They move to Berlin from Tampere, Finland (4-9 March).
“African Folk Tales Animated’ has also been selected for Amakula Kampala International Film Festival in Uganda (1-11 May), besides being lined up for screening in Kigali, Rwanda (March) and in Brussels, Belgium (April).
The 3rd Lola Kenya Screen/ Kids for Kids Africa festival takes place in Nairobi from 4 to 9 August. Children and youth interested in participating in the official programmes of the event—Production Workshop, Film Selection Committee, Film Jury, Film Press, Programme Presentation—have until 15 April to send in their application.
“Manani Ogres’, a fascinating animation on the importance of vigilance, was created by Joseph Hongo, Marcus Joseph, Norick Joseph, and Samuel Musembi to show that drumming, music and dance must be employed where vigilance fails.
Made by Samora Michelle, Adede Hawi NyOdero and Karama K Ogova, “Little Knowledge is Dangerous’ shows that one who tries to shock others by clever-by-half antics, usually ends up frying oneself in one’s own oil. The message is passed through Mjinga, Juha, and Mwehu with the playful use on Kiswahili carrying the message across. This film won the Most Creative Project at Lola Kenya Screen in 2007.
The message passed through “The Wise Bride’ is that when more than one suitor competes for a beautiful girl, the girl’s ingenuity carries the day. This film with a twist in the tale was conceived and executed by Alexandria Ngini, Aysha Satchu, Layla Satchu and Flora Wanjiru.
