Last week’s cautious optimism about the possibility of an end to the now six-week long Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike has been dealt a blow as WGA negotiators have not reached agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPT) regarding residuals from Internet downloads. The WGA is also demanding jurisdiction over reality TV and animation writing.
The US TV pilot season is now in jeopardy as if the strike lasts another month or so, it could lead to the termination of the 2008 pilot production season.
It is expected that other guilds, such as the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), will await the outcome of the strike before signing new contracts with the AMPTP. (Source: Studio Briefing)
