In true holiday season style, the animated “Surf’s Up’, about a group of surfing penguins (as opposed to tap-dancing penguins in “Happy Feet’) and featuring the voices of up and comers like Shia LaBouef and Zooey Deschanel, as well as established names Jeff Bridges and James Woods, opened in top spot at the South African box office during the week 30 November to 6 December.
The film impressively amassed R3m in its opening week, pushing “Beowulf’ into second spot. Then comes the Ben Stiller comedy “Heartbreak Kid’, followed by new release “Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium’, in which Dustin Hoffman stars as the 243-year old owner of the world’s most fantastical toy store.
In fifth spot is Vince Vaughn’s “Fred Claus’. The CIA political thriller “Rendition’, starring Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by South Africa’s Oscar winner Gavin Hood (“Tsotsi), opened in seventh spot with R534,569.
