Business Day reports that South African media conglomerate Naspers, owner of pay-TV satellite operator MultiChoice, terrestrial pay-TV channel M-Net and several newspapers and magazines, has improved its performance in the six months to September.
The report attributes the growth to Naspers’ preparing for competition in the pay-TV arena with the recent granting of four new licences for satellite and cable subscription services. Naspers has been rolling out new pay-TV products and services, including lower-cost offerings.
The company’s total subscription base has grown by 109,000 with 80,000 new subscribers on its South African platform DStv over the six month period. This gives Naspers a total of 1.47m subscribers in South Africa.
