Yet another big budget sequel has hit the South African box office, which proves that Hollywood just loves successful formulas. “Rush Hour III’ starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker took R3.4m in its first week of release (31 August – 6 September), pushing “The Bourne Ultimatum’ to second spot. The latter, a mega worldwide hit, has been on circuit for four weeks and has clocked up R8.7m.
In third spot for the above week is “Evan Almighty’ with R2.7m in total, followed by “Hairspray’ at R4.2 and “License to Wed’ at R4.8m.
Amazingly, the Swedish arthouse movie “As it is in Heaven’ is still in the top 10 after 19 weeks of release. To date it has made R3.8m, which is good for an arthouse release but pales in comparison to the blockbusters. However, it has generated enough ticket sales each week to keep its spot in the lower end of the top 10. (Figures supplied by SAFACT)
