“The World Unseen’, a film by South African-born award-winning author Shamim Sarif is one of 14 films to have been selected for the Discovery section at the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival (6 – 15 September).
Discovery, now in its 12th year, is targeted at new and emerging directors from around the world, one of whom will win the $10 000 Diesel Discovery Award, voted on the festival’s accredited journalists.
Sarif shot “The World Unseen’ in South Africa earlier this year with a mostly local crew and cast. The film tells how free-spirited Amina (Sheetal Sheth) and married Miriam (Lisa Ray) fall in love in 1950s apartheid South Africa and set in motion a chain of events that changes both women forever. This is Sarif’s second film.
