It would be interesting to know whether South Africa is following the same ad spend trend as in the UK where media has experienced yet another upbeat quarter-year in terms of ad spend. The strongest growth is internet advertising according to a report by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA).

According to the quarterly Bellwether Report from the IPA, one in five of all companies have reported an upward increase in their media budgets. There is positive growth in direct marketing ad spend, traditional print and broadcast media.
However the biggest surge in ad spend is with the Internet which according to the report now accounts for six per cent of all marketing spend. The report shows 20% of businesses are now allocating at least 10% of their total spend to the Web.

Growth in ad-spend is coming from the service sector, as well as IT/computing, travel and entertainment. Retailers’ ad spend is also strong. Falls are in industrial advertising and utilities sectors.
