Cannes, France: Paula Brown has compiled a list of terminology, quotes and interesting statistical data which she picked up from the conference sessions she attended at the is year’s MIPTV which closed on Friday, 20 April.

Fragment: a term used by Broadcasters when adding the multitude of media platforms to their bouquet or service. For example the marketing of a new show would include – Trailers shown on-line across top sites; a week before, followed up by pay-on-demand viewing of the show a day before launch; on the day of the launch, provide a shortened version of the show on Mobile; after the launch, offer the opportunity to download the show (either ad-funded or paid for by the user).

Wag the long tail:

The use of old footage, television brands of the past. Repackage and repurpose these for 360 degree platforms.

Cross Platform: taking brands (television shows) across all digital offerings.

Mobile TV: Uses streaming technology.

MBTV (Mobile Broadcast TV): Uses Broadcast technology.

TLA – Three letter acronyms (According to Mark Selby of Nokia, usually introduced by the Americans)

Social Media Networking (SMN) – seeking to replace the term UGC (User Generated Content)

Mash-ups: Taking old ideas (or old content or, other peoples ideas) and mashing them up with new ideas

Snacking: Mobile TV term based on trials indicating viewers of Mobile TV spending less than 5 minutes watching

VOD – Video on Demand (If you have a PVR or ever downloaded a music video, you will understand this)

Mobisodes: Short version format shows made for Mobile TV (Copyright: Fox)

DVB-H: Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld. A technical specification for bringing broadcast services to handheld receivers.
