While “Babel’ took top honours for Best Dramatic film at the 64th Annual Golden Globes held in Los Angeles on 15 January, Dame Helen Mirren won two Best Actress awards, one for playing Elizabeth II in the film “The Queen’ and the other for playing Elizabeth I in the TV mini-series “Elizabeth I’.
Martin Scorsese won the Best Director award for “The Departed’ and “Dreamgirls’ was judged the Best Musical or Comedy. Newcomer Jennifer Hudson (ex American Idols) was judged Best Supporting Actress in a Musical or Comedy for “Dreamgirls’, with Eddie Murphy winning his first Globe as Best Supporting Actor for the same film.
Forrest Whittaker took home Best Actor in a Dramatic Film for his role as Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland’. Meryl Streep won for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for “The Devil Wears Prada’. A popular winner was Sacha Baron Cohen as Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his mockumentary, “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’.
The Best Foreign Language Film was “Letters From Iwo Jima’, a movie with Japanese dialogue directed by Clint Eastwood. “Cars’ won Best Animated Film.
Warren Beatty was honoured with the Cecil B De Mille Award for his lifetime contribution to film.
Winners in the major Television categories were “Grey’s Anatomy’ (Best Drama Series), with Hugh Laurie (“House’) and Kyra Sedwick (“The Closer’) taking home the Best Actor and Actress Awards. Best TV Series Musical or Comedy was judged to be “Ugly Betty’, with America Ferrera winning Best Actress for the same show. Alec Baldwin scored as Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for “30 Rock’.
The Globes are voted on by the 80 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are usually a fairly good indication of who will make the Oscars nominations, to be announced on 25 January.
