Kwaito music star, TV personality and actor, Zola (Tsotsi), is set to receive the Special Recognition Award at the 2006 Channel O African Music Video Awards ceremony for his contribution to the upliftment of young people on the continent.

The Awards ceremony will be held at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg on Sunday 15 October and will be broadcast on Channel O (DStv’s 24-hour African music channel) on Sunday, 22 October at 20:00 CAT.

Zola’s life story is that of one man’s rise from the streets of Soweto to Kwaito’s most wanted. The architect of Kwaito started a solo career that is responsible for four multi platinum albums. He is also a poet and a humanitarian – a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador for East Africa. This is in recognition for work done on a TV documentary titled Africa Youth Speak.

Zola has addressed the UN World conference on the Arms Control Bill and was part of a discussion on CNN’s Connects show on South Africa’s progress 12 years into democracy. He will record a posthumous collaboration with Snoop and the late hip hop legend Tupac Shakur. Zola has also been instrumental in bringing and facilitating the scattering of Tupac Shakur’s ashes in Soweto, an event that will take place on 13 September 2006.
