M-Net spends every magical moment creating the ultimate TV entertainment experience. When it comes to digital television, high definition broadcasting, customer engagement, creating original South African productions and bringing the freshest TV experience to viewers, M-Net is first.

M-Net introduces Express to Explora

M-Net is bringing the latest international programming to viewers faster than ever before, this time for the benefit of DStv Premium customers with a DStv Explora. Instead of waiting for a gap in the prime-time schedule on M-Net 101 or M-Net Edge, hand-picked series will be available exclusively on the DStv Explora within 24 hours of their US launch times.

Starting on Thursday 24 September, the first four series that will receive the Express to Explora treatment are: season 1 of Limitless, starring Brian Finch; the sixth season of the cop drama Blue Bloods, starring Tom Selleck; the new medical drama Code Black; and the third season of The Blacklist.

“Our superfast Express from the US delivery service has already revolutionised the way in which many people watch TV,’ says M-Net director of General Entertainment, Gideon Khobane, “and we believe that series fans will love being able to watch more shows for which there simply are no available time slots yet, as they play out in the US. We’re thrilled that we’re able to make use of the incredible technology provided by the DStv Explora to make Express to Explora happen.”

DStv Premium customers with Explora’s don’t just have these four series to look forward to; they will also get all first episodes of series as they premiere on M-Net 101 and M-Net Edge.

“The new age of television is all about convenience, as a result of their busy lifestyles, viewers sometimes miss out on an entire series because they couldn’t watch the first episode that introduced the main characters and vital story lines. We’re now making it easier for them to never miss out on one of our excellent series again,” Khobane explains.

M-Net brings “The Voice’ to SA

M-Net is adding yet another local version of a hugely successful international talent competition to its slate of reality shows. The Voice South Africa will hit local screens in 2016 and will be screened exclusively on M-Net (DStv channel 101).

Since its 2010 debut in the Netherlands as The Voice of Holland, this singing competition created by John de Mol, the television guru who also brought us Big Brother and Fear Factor, has taken the world by storm. It has been a hit in the US, Australia and UK, where the likes of Adam Levine, Blake Sheldon, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Pharrell Williams, Sir Tom Jones, Rita Ora, Kylie Minogue, Joel Madden and Ricky Martin have occupied the show’s iconic red chairs to choose and then coach a variety of highly talented singers. Joining a long list of countries – from Afghanistan, Brazil and China to Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam – South Africa is now the 60th country in the world to add a local flavour to The Voice.

“M-Net has become renowned as the home of top-notch reality fare and we’re very excited to confirm that The Voice South Africa will be our big attraction for 2016,” says M-Net CEO Yolisa Phahle. “With its impeccable international track record and blend of undiscovered talent, star power and spectacular sets, it’s the perfect fit for a channel that puts a high premium on great family entertainment. To top it off, The Voice South Africa will be giving local singers the opportunity of a lifetime – to be coached by the absolute best in the local music business. A show of this magnitude is also a fantastic platform for some of our biggest local recording artists. Apart from the panel of four local coaches, several guest coaches will also make guest appearances to hone our talent.’

The Voice comprises three phases: Once the best singers are identified at the countrywide open auditions, they go through to the Blind Audition phase, where four coaches – all professional recording artists in their own right – listen to them sing without actually seeing them. If a coach is interested in a singer, they push a button that swivels their chair around to face the contestant. If more than one coach turns their chair, the contestant has the opportunity to pick which coach they’d prefer to work with. Once all of the coaches have a set amount of singers in their teams, the show moves onto the Battle Rounds, where each coach pairs two of their contestants up to perform together, and then chooses only one to go through to the next round. The last phase is the Live Shows, where the remaining contestants sing for the public’s votes, until one singer is officially named the winner of The Voice South Africa.

The names of the four South African coaches who will develop the singers in their team mentally, musically and technically, will be announced later this year.

“The Voice South Africa will be looking for a class act singer with a unique sound – the kind that will make you stop to listen closely or create awe-inspiring moments,” says Harrie Linders, MD of AMPN, the production company which will be creating the show for M-Net in conjunction with international format right holders TALPA International. “Instead of judging someone on his or her looks or personality, it’s all about the voice and it doesn’t matter what your musical background is. The Voice encompasses a wide variety of music genres.”

Entries will be open to all South African citizens older than 18 years and there’s no upper age cut-off. While there will be open auditions in the country’s biggest cities, singers who want to be part of the show will also be able to submit a song online for a possible fast track to the front of the audition queues. Details about these submissions, the audition dates and venues, as well as the full prize package will be made available on the M-Net website from early September.

M-Net’s MiM Career Expo showcases film and TV career opportunities

M-Net recently partnered with the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg to host the MiM Career Expo, which ran from 11 to 14 August 2015. The event aimed to give youth from previously
disadvantaged communities the opportunity to experience what the film and
television industry is all about, exposing them to the broad array of career
prospects within the industry.

An estimated 7200 high school learners, from across South Africa, were exposed
to diverse career opportunities at the event.

Learners who attended the expo went on a tour where they were exposed to the
different stages involved in putting together television content for production – from commissioning programmes and content to eventually airing it on TV. Some of the roles which were highlighted included production commissioning, concept creation, script writing, producing, directing, cinematography, sound, art direction (decor, wardrobe, make-up), editing, post-production and broadcasting, as well as business support functions such as human resources, finance, legal services and IT, and technical support often offered by engineers.

“Nollywood and Hollywood make significant contributions to the GDP of Nigeria and
the US. Our industry has the potential to do the same, yet many do not realise the
opportunities that exist,’ said Yolisa Phahle, M-Net South Africa chief executive
officer. “The MiM Career Expo provides an eye opening view of the many roles that
exist within the film and television industry.’

David Kramer, CEO of the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre commented on the
collaboration, “Our goal is to increase young people’s awareness and interest in the
wide spectrum of post-school careers.’

Actors from Isibaya on M-Net’s Mzansi Magic, Zakhele Stanley
Mabasa-Mokone (Skhaleni) and Enest Thabani Gumede (Ntandane), also formed part
of the Career Expo, where learners had a chance to join them
on a mock-up set as extras.

The M-Net Magic in Motion Career Expo will also travel to the KZN Science Centre in
Durban from 18 to 21 August 2015 and the Cape Town Science Centre from 25 to
28 August 2015. For more information about the MiM Career Expo, visit the M-Net Magic in Motion website.

M-Net City tweaks its schedule

M-Net City is making some changes to its line-up to allow DStv Compact viewers to enjoy more local fare alongside a slate of top-notch international shows. From Monday 3 August, the channel will add two telenovelas, four local comedies and a local game show to its early evening weekday schedule while there will also be a special treat for mature, discerning viewers late at night.

“In our quest to create compelling television channels for different target audiences, it’s important for us to keep a constant eye on the preferences and lifestyles of our viewers,” explains Gideon Khobane, director, M-Net general entertainment channels. “Our most recent research indicated that M-Net City viewers prefer light-hearted escapism when arriving home after a hard day’s work and telenovelas and local comedy are the perfect genres to get them to chill out in front of the television. We trust that our M-Net City viewers will enjoy our tweaks to the channel which made these additions possible.”

To make space for the two highly-acclaimed telenovelas, which will be screened between 17h00 and 19h00, the talk shows The Doctors and The Jerry Springer Show will move to earlier time slots – 15h00 and 16h00 respectively from Mondays to Fridays.

In future, the 17h00 timeslot will belong to the telenovela Sparkling Girls in which three housekeepers find fame and fortune when their music goes viral, but then have to deal with a jealous and vindictive singer will do whatever it takes to tear them apart. Thereafter, at 18h00, M-Net City will bring viewers the Brazilian series Side by Side which scooped an International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela. It explores the friendship of two women in the early 20th century in a country where the divisions of wealth, power and class still prevailed.

At 19h00, every Monday to Thursday, viewers will be able to enjoy these popular local comedy shows:
Mondays – Tonight with Trevor Noah. South African comedian Trevor Noah showcases his distinctly South African sense of humour in this home-grown talk show.
Tuesdays – The Coconuts. When a middle-class white family are miraculously turned black, chaos ensues as they deal with day-to-day South African situations.
Wednesdays – Clipz. 94.7 breakfast host, Darren “Whackhead’ Simpson, takes a look at classic online stars and their internet exploits.
Thursdays – Check Coast. This hilarious series follows the lives of the staff at a local Home Affairs office, a place where you find all kinds of comical conundrums.

On Friday nights at 19h00 M-Net City viewers can enjoy the blockbuster local game show Deal or No Deal. Host Ed Jordan is surrounded by a bevy of beautiful models who carry suitcases that contain different amounts of money. Only one of them has a R1 million – and it’s up to the contestants to choose the right one.

Once the children are tucked into bed, everyone who has missed out on Game of Thrones, or who would like to see the series from beginning to end, should remember to tune in. Game of Thrones season 1 to 5 will be screened on Mondays to Fridays at 23h00 as of 3 August.

Other new series’ starting this August on M-Net City are the action drama NCIS: Los Angeles season 6 (14 August at 21h00) and the family drama The Slap season 1 (19 August at 22h00).

M-Net Movies and kykNET back edgy local film

M-Net Movies and kykNET have decided to throw their weight behind a new local feature film which aims to break the silence around woman and child abuse. Based on the highly-acclaimed novel Whiplash by Tracey Farren, Shushh will tell the hard-hitting story of Tess, a sassy young Afrikaans sex worker from Muizenberg who has to face the demons of her past when she falls pregnant.

The financial contribution from M-Net Movies and kykNET completes the funding for this passion project, which had tongues wagging around Women’s Day last year. At the time, director Meg Rickards walked from the centre of Cape Town to Muizenberg, dressed in a petticoat and sporting painted-on bruises to increase awareness around women abuse – and to raise funds for the movie.

“The response to the project has been incredible,” says Rickards, who recently directed the award-winning documentary 1994: the bloody miracle. “And we’re beyond excited that M-Net Movies and kykNET are now also standing behind a story that simply cries out to be told. After a four-year search for funding, we have found partners who share our vision and are getting amazing cast and crew on board, all of whom share our passion for this film. The green light from kykNET and M-Net movies will allow us to enhance the gravitas of the story and production quality of the film immensely.”

M-Net movies director Jan du Plessis says Shushh has the potential to become a landmark South African film. “The script is brutally honest; the story is gritty; heart-wrenching; raw and beautiful and the pill-popping, fragile, yet feisty character of Tess is unlike anything we’ve seen in a South African films before. She will take audiences through an intense emotional journey and raise important issues – but with her wry humour and courage, and without ever becoming preachy. The development of the local film industry is incredibly important for M-Net Movies and kykNET and we’re definitely pushing the boundaries with this edgy film.”

Filming for Shushh will commence in September, with the lead actors expected to be announced shortly. The project, which is being produced by Boondogle Films and Get the Picture, is also supported by the National Film and Video Foundation and the Department of Trade and Industry.

The script for Shushh was written by author Tracey Farren, whose novel Whiplash was short-listed for the Sunday Times Fiction Prize in 2009, and was also honoured with a White Ribbon award by Women. The movie has had to find a new title, due to the success of the Oscar-winning film of the same name. The dialogue in Shussh will be a mix of Afrikaans and English.

M-Net partners with science centres for national career expo

M-Net has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with three science centers across South Africa to host national career exhibitions, under the umbrella of its M-Net Magic in Motion initiative. M-Net Magic in Motion, M-Net’s rebranded Corporate Social Investment initiative, comprises two flagship initiatives: the M-Net Magic in Motion Academy and the M-Net Magic in Motion Career Expo. This year, the expo will be held in three regions and will be targeted at Grade 11 learners.

The career expos will be held in the following regions, on the following dates:
• 11 to 14 August 2015, Johannesburg, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre
• 18 to 21 August 2015, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Science Centre
• 25 to 28 August 2015, Cape Town, Cape Town Science Centre

According to Kershnee Govender, M-Net corporate affairs director, “Collaboration with the science centres catapults our initiative as we are partnering with established entities who work closely with provincial education departments, have a significant reach, impact learners and students’ lives with the advice on offer and enjoy a clear understanding of the specific target audience M-Net is hoping to engage with.’

The three science centres currently provide learners and students with information about study and work opportunities, offering counselling and services to assist in making informed career decisions. In addition, the centres showcase science and technology through interactive, fun and informative exhibitions.

David Kramer, CEO of the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre commented on the collaboration, “Our new partnership with M-Net is an exciting achievement for Sci-Bono, and we are thrilled to work with Africa’s leading television broadcaster. Our goal is to increase young people’s awareness and interest in the wide spectrum of post-school careers. While Sci-Bono has a particular interest in science and technology, we recognise that our school system does not adequately provide our children with enough career information. This partnership with M-Net is a great milestone for Sci-Bono. As a major player in the broadcasting industry and an esteemed content provider, M-Net is in the best position to give young people a broad view of the television industry.’

M-Net appoints new channel director

With over six years of experience at the helm of some of M-Net’s biggest channel brands, M-Net’s newly-appointed director, Gideon Khobane is geared up for the increasing demands on Africa’s leading pay-TV service provider.

Having spent over six years running M-Net’s Africa Magic channels in neighbouring African countries, and more recently as M-Net’s research and business intelligence director, Gideon Khobane is no stranger to the rigorous M-Net environment, but he believes that his strategic and analytical expertise will give him the edge needed to drive M-Net’s premium brands forward.

Khobane, begins his journey as M-Net’s new director of the M-Net, M-Net Edge and the newly-rebranded M-Net City (formerly M-Net Series Zone) cluster. He feels that his considerable understanding of local audiences and markets will assist him in providing African viewers with the best available international content, alongside locally-produced shows, which he hopes will instil a sense of African pride amongst viewers.

Khobane’s new role will include management, overall content acquisition, scheduling and content marketing, while ensuring that the two M-Net premium brands, M-Net and M-Net Edge, remain the most loved and talked about channels on DStv Premium; with a view to the newly-launched M-Net City becoming one of the most-watched channels on the DStv Compact package. Khobane is currently considering strategies for greater audience engagement through the introduction of new local formats and adaptations of popular international productions.

He feels excited about his new role, stating that he has a formidable team and support structures at his disposal, enabling him to achieve his strategic objectives, whilst adding that there’s no doubt that the new challenge will push him beyond his comfort zone.

A background in research gave Khobane a broader view of how audiences consume content and he hopes to now apply those insights, as viewership patterns increasingly shift toward non-linear viewing, enabling him to create content in line with consumer wants, needs and lifestyle choices. “My research and content marketing background gives me a deep awareness of what sort of content has worked with M-Net audiences in the past, and how the team and I can convert those insights into higher viewership results today,’ he states.

Khobane explains that the increasingly-fragmenting TV landscape is the biggest challenge and opportunity for his new portfolio, “Market competition is always increasing, meaning more options for our viewers, so we can’t rest. Our aim is to always remain the top entertainment choice for our audience, and our offerings need to be innovative to constantly keep us top of mind.’

M-Net’s CEO for South Africa, Yolisa Phahle commented on Khobane’s appointment, “Gideon replaces Victor Eckard who successfully launched M-Net Edge, Express from the US, and has been instrumental in the success of Catch Up and Catch Up Plus, and has now been asked to head up the content division at DStv Digital Media. M-Net and the M-Net Series channels will continue to drive growth for the company and I can think of no more suitably qualified individual than Gideon Khobane to take these channels forward. Gideon has played a critical role in the increasing success of the Africa Magic brand and more recently has driven M-Net’s strategy in South Africa.’

Khobane lists working in neighbouring African countries and finishing his master’s degree at WITS Business School, with M-Net’s backing, as some of his career highlights thus far, “The experience showed me the immense beauty and diversity of our continent, giving me a great appreciation for the many cultures we have.’

Gideon affirms that his overarching goal is to turn his brands into the most talked about channels in Africa, in so doing, leaving a lasting impact with M-Net viewers.

Ryan O’Connor will host M-Net’s Power Couple

M-Net has appointed KFM’s Ryan O’Connor as the presenter of Power Couple, the much-anticipated new reality show that will employ spectacular challenges to test the relationships of eight couples who will be living together in a luxurious villa, hoping to win a stash of cash.

The popular Cape Town radio personality, known for his wicked sense of humour, received the good news in a rather unusual way – via Jo’burg-based colleague Darren ‘Whackhead’ Simpson, who knew that Ryan was anxiously waiting to hear from the Power Couple producers after his make-or-break audition. In a prank call, Whackhead pretended to be a powerful M-Net executive who had to decide whether O’Connor would be committed to fulfilling the channel’s particularly difficult requirements for this unique show. While he was willing to get into shape with series of impossible diets, he couldn’t stomach the request to gobble down a bullfrog with the contestants.

Luckily, M-Net CEO for South Africa, Yolisa Phahle then stepped in to end his misery. “You got the gig,” she said. “We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome you to the M-Net family. We wanted a new face for this big new show and we know that some of the best television presenters come from radio.”

According to M-Net’s head of publicity, Lani Lombard, the Power Couple producers were looking for a presenter with great people skills to whom both the contestants and viewers at home could relate. “As the show is all about love and taking risks, the contestants are bound to go on a roller-coaster ride of emotions and Ryan is the perfect person to guide them through this incredible journey. He’s a natural who has proved on radio that he has the ability to handle difficult situations and his wit, warm personality and amazing energy will set the scene for this fantastic, feel-good show.”

Power Couple will be broadcast on M-Net 101 from August 2015.
