Two Globes for Mirren

While "Babel' took top honours for Best Dramatic film at the 64th Annual Golden Globes held in Los Angeles on 15 January, Dame Helen Mirren won two Best Actress awards, one for playing Elizabeth II in the film "The Queen' and the other for playing Elizabeth I in the TV mini-series "Elizabeth I'.

Frears tops Cannes jury

Currently the recipient of critical acclaim, awards and nominations for his film The Queen, starring Helen Mirren, British director Stephen Frears has been chosen to preside as president of the Jury at the Cannes International Film Festival in May.

Borat recognised by WGA

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has nominated Sacha Baron Cohen for Best Adapted Screenplay for his spoof documentary, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious National of Kazakhstan.

Italy's Ministry of Culture has announced that the Venice Film Festivals long awaited renovated venue will be completed in 2010.

Possible buyout of Primedia

Media group Primedia told Business Day on Wednesday 10 January that it had been approached by a consortium of investors wanting to buy it out. Based on a possible buyout, Primedia shares surged 15% higher at R23 on the JSE after the announcement. Its "N' shares were 11,1% higher at R22, valuing the group at R5,4bn.

First-time nominees dominate DGA Awards

On 9 January, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced the nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for the year 2006.
