At the closing ceremony of the 2015 International Environmental Film Festival (FIFE) in Paris, the South African documentary The Shore Break won the Best Full-Length Documentary Award.
The jury called it “a firm favourite – an exceptional film” that “deeply moved” them. One juror commented that The Shore Break plays out like a thriller while another appreciated the spectacular Wild Coast landscapes captured with beautiful cinematography.
The Shore Break, directed by Ryley Grunenwald, tells the tale of two cousins from the Wild Coast whose opposing plans on how to develop their land divide their community, with ripple effects to their Pondo monarchy and the South African Government. Since the film had its world premiere at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA) late last year, it has been garnering interest from global film festivals and broadcasters. Furthermore, The Shore Break was recently selected by the Bertha BRITDOC Connect Fund to receive support towards an outreach campaign to use the film for social good.
Producers Odette Geldenhuys and Ryley Grunenwald say that they look forward to releasing the film in South Africa in the next few months.
