AfriDocs Film Week, which features on channel ED (DStv channel 190 and GOtv
channel 65) from 21 to 27 July, will screen top African documentaries on Tuesday
evenings, including five from the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) line-
up. The screenings are an initiative of Steps, a South African documentary
production and distribution company and the Bertha Foundation, an
organisation which seeks to encourage progressive and fair societies through
activism, media, law and enterprise.
Don Edkins, AfriDocs Executive Producer at Steps Cape Town commented, “So
many documentary films have been shot in Africa, but very few have been seen
by African audiences. This heralds a new era of distribution for the
continent.’
The films will be broadcast via satellite to 49 countries and an additional 100
cities in eight countries terrestrially. The film selection features a range of
pertinent content including stories about Africa’s artistic icons, political leaders,
activists and criminals.
Documentaries featuring in the programme which will also screen at DIFF
between 17 and 27 July in KwaZulu Natal include: Miners Shot Down,
Concerning Violence, I, Afrikaner, The Irresistible Rise of Moise Katumbi and Soft Vengeance.
Rebecca Lichtenfeld, Director of Social Impact Media at Bertha Philanthropies
added, “Connecting documentary film to African audiences is something we have
been hoping to do for some time now, and this is an ideal platform for
that.’
