Ola Films, a Johannesburg-based production company, offers a behind the
scenes
look at the music video they shot for Nozinja, a South African music producer.
The mastermind behind the Shangaan Electro dance movement recently signed
with UK
label Warp Records and released his debut single and video, Tsekeleke, in April
2014.
Directed by Chris Saunders and produced by Olivia Leitch, the video makes
use of
surrealist Shangaan visuals, colourfully creative costumes, rapid dance moves
and a fast
pace beat. Nozinja told FACT magazine: “This speed is abnormal”. The track also
makes
use of helium vocals, intricate percussion and high-speed video game sounds.
Shangaan electro, a dance movement originating from Nozinja himself, was
born
from a 21st century reboot of local folk traditions in South African townships and
draws
from Tsonga Disco and Kwaito House music. The style was developed in South
Africa but
has become popular in Europe and is quickly gaining international attention.
Soon after the video was released, Nozinja and Warp Records released
news of
upcoming live shows around various parts of Europe in April, May and August of
this
year.
