The animated feature film Khumba, which has done exceptionally well at the South African box office, maintaining the number one spot in cinemas for two weeks, has extended its success into international territories winning two Gold Panda Awards at the Sichuan Festival in China.
In a ceremony held in Chengdu, the film competed with 682 entries from 42 regions and took home awards for Best Overseas Animated Feature as well as the Grand Prize for Animation.
Triggerfish’s second feature film follows on the success of Adventures in Zambezia, which was recently nominated for the Golden Elephant at the 18th International Children’s Film Festival of India.
Director Anthony Silverston said: “We are extremely grateful that Khumba has been recognised for this prestigious award. It is a wonderful acknowledgment for the whole team who made the movie. We never imagined our zebra from the Karoo in South Africa would meet a Gold Panda in Sichaun, China – let alone two!’
Released by Indigenous Film Distribution, Khumba is set for an Oscar-qualifying screening run from 6 December in the US and will continue to roll out to the rest of the world in 2014.
