On 19, 23 and 24 October at 19h30 and on 20 October at 14h30 Cinema Nouveau, in collaboration with performance broadcaster, National Theatre Live, screens a filmed UK live production of William Shakespeare’s Othello.

This will be the first of three exciting new Shakespearean interpretations, including Macbeth and Coriolanus, to screen in South Africa.

Earlier this year the National Theatre production of Othello played to sold-out performances and received five-star reviews including that of Britain’s The Times which referred to it as “a: breath-taking show of emotional firepower.’

The play was directed by successful National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner (Timon of Athens, One Man, Two Guvnors) and designed by Vicki Mortimer, with lighting by Jon Clark and fight direction by Kate Waters.

Olivier Award-winning actor and National Theatre associate Adrian Lester (Henry V at the National Theatre, BBC’s Hustle) plays the lead role of Othello with fellow Olivier Award-winner Rory Kinnear (The Last of the Haussmans, James Bond: Skyfall) as Iago, Olivia Vinall as Desdemona and Jonathan Bailey as the young Cassio.

Othello is a play about the destructive power of jealousy and features a scheme instigated by Iago, who is passed over for promotion by military operation leader Othello in favour of the young Cassio. In an attempt to get revenge, Iago convinces Othello that his new and much younger wife Desdemona and Cassio are having an affair.

The movie will have four screenings only at Cinema Nouveau theatres in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town and at Ster-Kinekor Blue Route Mall.
