Handel’s masterpiece, Guilio Cesare, is the grand finale in the highly successful
season of The Met: Live in HD from The Metropolitan Opera in New York. This
production shows exclusively at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor theatres
countrywide from Saturday 1 June.

David Daniels (Guilio Cesare) and Natalie Dessay (Cleopatra) star in the critically
acclaimed and innovative staging of Handel’s Baroque classic, which is directed by
David McVicar and that was performed for the first time at The Met.

The production, which is based on the romance between Julius Caesar and Cleopatra,
uses Baroque theatrical devices, choreography and highlighted themes of love and
war to tell what the director describes as “a semi-comic, semi-tragic adventure story.’

David Daniels, considered the world’s leading countertenor, sings the title role of
Julius Caesar and opposite him is Natalie Dessay in her house role debut as the
legendary Cleopatra.

The cast also includes Alice Coote as young Sesto, Patricia Bardon as Roman widow
Cornelia, Guido Loconsolo as the scheming Egyptian general Achilla, John Moore as
Roman general Curio, French countertenor Christophe Dumaux as Tolomeo,
Cleopatra’s brother and co-ruler, and Rachid Ben Abdeslam as the Egyptian servant
Nireno.

The running time of the production is just more than five hours (including two
intermissions).

Don’t miss the limited season of Giulio Cesare at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-
Kinekor theatres from 1 June at 17h00.
