TV platform for people living with Aids

Popular TV show Siyayinqoba Beat It!, a weekly programme for everyone living with HIV and Aids, as well as their partners, families, friends and care givers, returns to SABC1 on Thursdays at 13h30 from 4 April. Siyayinqoba Beat It! is produced by Community Media Trust in partnership with SABC Education.

Since 1999 the show has provided a platform for people living with Aids to share their challenges and victories. Many people living in isolation with HIV find that through Siyayinqoba Beat It! they are part of a vibrant and growing community of people who are meeting and beating the challenges of AIDS.

In the first episode Siyayinqoba Beat It! looks at safe male circumcision and how it helps reduce the risk of being infected with HIV and other sexually transmitted illnesses. Three men speak about their decision to be circumcised and their experience of the procedure. The studio discussion is around cultural sensitivities and how best to encourage more men to get circumcised.

In episode two on 11 April Siyayinqoba Beat It! looks at how the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) helps reduce HIV infection rates from mothers to their babies. Unathi Mbhodana speaks about her journey of falling pregnant, going on PMTCT and giving birth to an HIV negative baby. In studio Precious Robinson from the Department of Health explains the rollout of fixed dose combination drugs for all HIV positive pregnant women from the beginning of April and explains the changes this has for PMTCT protocol.
