On 21 January South Africa’s Department of Communications (DoC) issued a short statement announcing that its director general, Rosey Sekese, has been placed on special leave. Deputy director general Gift Buthelezi has been appointed as acting director general until 15 February 2013.
Late last year Mail & Guardian reported that Sekese was found to have misled parliament when she told the portfolio committee on communications that she had signed a performance agreement for the 2012/2013 financial year. Deputy Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams confirmed that Sekese had not signed the contract.
IT Web published a story in early November stating that criminal charges could be laid against Sekese for providing false information to parliament.
