Ten VJ wannabes from all over South Africa are one step closer to the chance of a lifetime after making it through to the next stage of the 2012 MTV Base VJ Search. The qualifiers were revealed during the fourth episode of the reality series, aired on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) on Tuesday 28 August.
The 10 qualifying contestants who will participate in further elimination and workshop phases of the VJ talent search are Nomusi Mabena (19); Keitumetse Kasonkola (24); Naledi Radebe (21); Noluthando Malope (19); Tumelo Mathotoane (21); Lungelo Dlamini (18); Mthoko Mkhathini (22); Nomzamo Mbatha (22); Nondumiso Nyembezi (22); and Roxanne Kalie (22).
The ultimate victor in the MTV Base VJ Search will win a life-changing job and become MTV Base’s first new South African VJ since Fikile Moeti won in 2006 – hosting a show on MTV Base and featuring on Club 808, e.tv’s top music programme. The winner will be announced in October 2012.
The latest episode followed the 40 qualifiers from the Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg auditions plus two “wild card’ entries who submitted their entries online as they strutted their stuff in front of judges Azania Mosaka, HHP and Tim Horwood. The contestants were challenged to show off their freestyle skills in a red carpet scenario set at the MTV VMAs and also to demonstrate their interviewing skills by trying them out on comedian Mpho Popps.

Next week the 10 contestants are trained by industry experts including Bonang Matheba and e.tv’s Mo Flava before being given their first on camera challenge – a task which may see some of the strongest candidates buckle under the pressure. At the end of the episode, the 10 will be narrowed down to five.
